Review of our last concert

The orchestra took to the stage at St James’ Church on Saturday 18th September 2021 with 29 musicians who performed a lively prom concert of hope to a packed audience.

Musical director and conductor James Rushman said: “I am proud and delighted that, as we take our first steps back to normality following the last 18 months of pandemic, the orchestra is able to return to live performances. We are pleased also to welcome back Kay Durrant who has been with us as leader of the orchestra since 1999”.

The concert opened with the Olympic Fanfare and Theme, whilst the rest of the programme had a distinct American theme. The orchestra played wonderfully throughout, such pieces as The Washington Post March, the theme from ET, Somewhere in Time, The Liberty Bell March, Moonlight Serenade, The Stars and Stripes Forever March and a selection from West Side Story.

The orchestra was also joined by local soprano Lorna Haynes singing La Mama Morta and Safe From Harm. She appeared again in the second half for a rousing rendition of Rule Britannia when all the Prom favourites including Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory, other pieces from Fantasia on British Sea Songs, Radetzky March and Sussex by the Sea were performed to the delight of the audience who joined in flag waving, cheering and singing with gusto.

This concert was dedicated to Phillip Johnson, a member who sadly died earlier this year. Chris Allen read the poem ‘A Rainbow of Hope’ which was dedicated to all frontline workers who continued to care for us during the lockdowns as well as those who have been personally affected by the pandemic. A second poem ‘Look for the Blossom’ was read by him, both of which were very well received.

There was a retiring collection for MacMillan charity.

Soothes the mind and gives it rest,

Heals the heart and makes it whole,

Flows from Heaven to the soul."
